Find the Commands to Run Applications in Ubuntu

When you install an application in Ubuntu, it is usually added to the Applications menu on the desktop. However, some applications may not be added to the menu and you must find where they are installed in order to run them or add them to the panel for easy access.

Before we explain how to find the location of an application, we will show you how to generate a list of installed software. You may not know the exact name of the application you want to run, so looking through a list of installed applications might help.

To generate a list of installed software, select Accessories | Terminal from the Applications menu.

Enter the following command at the prompt to generate a list of installed software into a text file called installed-software.txt.

$ dpkg –get-selections > installed-software.txt

NOTE: There are two dashes before “get-selections.”

The installed-software.txt file is saved in your Home folder. Select Home Folder from the Places menu.

Double-click the installed-software.txt file in your home directory to open it in the default text editor.

NOTE: For information about changing the default text editor in Ubuntu, see our post, Change the Default Text Editor in Ubuntu.

Scroll through the list of alphabetically arranged software packages, or applications, until you find the one you want to run. Note the full name of the application.

Now that you have found the software package name, the best way to run that application, if it is not found in the menu, is using the Run Application dialog box, as shown below.

However, we may have the name of the application, but we still need to know where the application was installed. To find that out, we use the whereis command. Open a Terminal window as described earlier in this post. Enter the following command at the prompt.

$ whereis firefox

NOTE: If you are looking for a different application, enter the application name as it was listed in the generated list of installed software in place of firefox in the above command.

Any locations that have to do with the indicated application are listed. Most executables for applications are installed in the /usr/bin directory. So, we can assume that the /usr/bin/firefox result listed is the location of the executable for Firefox.

To run Firefox using the path to the executable we found using the whereis command, press Alt + F2 to open the Run Application dialog box. Enter the full path to the executable for the desired application in the edit box. The application should display in the list of known applications. Click Run.

In our example, the Firefox main window opens.

It is a good idea to backup the generated list of installed software you created in the installed-software.txt file. This gives you an idea of what you had installed in case you have to reinstall Ubuntu for any reason.

Run Firefox with More than One Profile at the Same Time

There may be various reasons why you might want to run multiple Firefox profiles at one time. You may want to test extensions without affecting your current setup, create a minimal profile for checking email, or you may just want to use a clean profile sometimes.

There is a way you can run multiple instances of Firefox, each running a separate profile using specially-created Firefox shortcuts. We will show you how to create special shortcuts in Windows 7 and special launchers in Ubuntu 10.10. The procedures for each operating system should work the same way in earlier versions of the same operating system.

First, you need to create a new profile, if you only have one. Our previous post, Speed Up the Start Time for Firefox by Creating a New Profile, shows you how to create a new profile, so we won’t cover that again here. However, we will show you how to open the Firefox Profile Manager in Ubuntu. Once open, the Profile Manager operates the same way in both Windows and Linux.

IMPORTANT: In the post mentioned above, you are told to turn off the Don’t ask at startup check box on the Profile Manager. To run multiple Firefox profiles at once, make sure that check box is turned on (has a check mark in it).

To access the Firefox Profile Manager in Ubuntu, press Alt + F2. Enter the following command in the edit box and click Run.

/usr/bin/firefox -P

NOTE: The icon automatically sets to the Firefox icon once you type the full path to the Firefox executable file.

Once the Profile Manager is open, you can follow the steps in the post mentioned above to create a new profile in Ubuntu. The steps for creating a new profile in Ubuntu are the same as they are for creating a profile in Windows.

The next step is to create another Firefox shortcut for each profile you want to open. First, we will create shortcuts in Windows 7.

Right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select New | Shortcut from the popup menu.

The Create Shortcut dialog box displays. Click the Browse button to select the location of the Firefox executable file for the shortcut.

On the Browse for Files or Folders dialog box, navigate to the location of the Firefox executable file (generally found at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox) and select the firefox.exe file. Click OK.

You are returned to the Create Shortcut dialog box. The full path to the Firefox executable file is inserted in the Type the location of the item edit box. Put the cursor at the end of that path, and type a space followed by the following text.

-P {Profile Name} -no-remote

Replace {Profile Name} with the name of one of your Firefox profiles.

NOTE: All the dashes are single dashes and there is one space on each side of the {Profile Name}.

Click Next.

Enter a descriptive name for the shortcut in the Type a name for this shortcut edit box and click Finish.

The new shortcut is added to the desktop. Follow the same steps above to create other shortcuts for other profiles you have created in Firefox.

NOTE: When you have multiple Firefox windows open in Windows 7 with different profiles, the icons on the Taskbar look the same. If you have a different web page open on the active tab in each Firefox window, you can tell the windows apart by moving your mouse over the Firefox icons on the Taskbar. The name of the currently open web page displays.

If you want your shortcut available on the Start menu or the Taskbar, right-click the shortcut and select Pin to Start Menu or Pin to Taskbar, respectively, from the popup menu.

Now, we will create Firefox launchers in Ubuntu. You can add launchers to the desktop, the panels, and the menu in Ubuntu.

To add a launcher to the desktop, right-click on the Ubuntu desktop and select Create Launcher from the popup menu.

The Create Launcher dialog box displays. Enter a name for the launcher in the Name edit box. Type the following command in the Command edit box.

/usr/bin/firefox -P Lori -no-remote

NOTES: The dashes and spaces in the command are the same as they are for Windows. Also, once you type “/usr/bin/firefox”, the icon automatically changes to the Firefox icon.

Enter a comment for the launcher in the Comment edit box. Click OK.

The new launcher is added to the desktop. Follow the same steps above to add launchers for other Firefox profiles you have created.

You can also add launchers to different Firefox profiles to a panel if desired. To do this, right-click on a panel and select Add to Panel from the popup menu.

The Add to Panel dialog box displays. Select Custom Application Launcher and click Add.

Fill out the information on the Create Launcher dialog box the same way you did when creating a desktop launcher. Click OK.

If you want to add more launchers to the panel for different Firefox profiles, leave the Add to Panel dialog box open, and select Custom Application Launcher and then click Add for each launcher you want to create. Fill out the Create Launcher dialog box using the appropriate Firefox profile name in the Command and entering a descriptive Name and Comment.

When you are finished creating the desired launchers, click Close to the close the Add to Panel dialog box.

Here’s an example of a Firefox launcher on the top panel for a specific profile.

To add a launcher to the Applications menu, right-click on the menu bar and select Edit Menus from the popup menu.

The Main Menu dialog box displays. Select the Internet submenu under the Applications menu in the list on the left. Click the New Item button. The Create Launcher dialog box displays again, just like when you added a launcher to the desktop and one to the panel. Fill it out as before.

The launcher is added to the list of items on the Internet menu. If you want to move it from the default location, select the item and use the Move Up and Move Down buttons. Use the New Item button for every launcher you want to add to the menu. When you are finished adding your launchers to the menu, click Close on the Main Menu dialog box to close it.

Any launchers you created are added to the Internet menu on the Applications menu.

Using multiple profiles can help you organize your work, performing certain categories of tasks in each profile. This is similar to using multiple desktops in Windows and Ubuntu (see our posts, Organize the Windows Desktop Using a Virtual Desktop Manager – Part I, Organize the Windows Desktop Using a Virtual Desktop Manager – Part II, and Use Multiple Workspaces in Ubuntu).

In fact, you can have a different profile to match the purpose of each virtual desktop you set up in Windows and the same for each workspace you set up in Ubuntu.

Change the Default Margins Used in New Word Documents

If you use the same margins in most of your Word documents, you can set default margins once to be used for every new Word document you create. This post shows you how to set your default margins for Word 2003, Word 2007, and Word 2010.

Word 2003

To set default margins in Word 2003, select Page Setup from the File menu.

The Page Setup dialog box displays. Make sure the Margins tab is active. Enter the margins you want to use as the default margins in the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right edit boxes in the Margins section. Click the Default button.

A confirmation dialog box displays making sure you want to change the default settings for Page Setup. Click Yes to accept your changes.

NOTE: When you click Yes on confirmation dialog box, the Page Setup dialog box is also closed.

If you need to temporarily change the margins to values other than the default values for a specific document, open the Page Setup dialog box as described earlier and enter the desired values in the Margins section. Click OK to accept the different values, rather than the Default button.

Word 2007 and Word 2010

The procedure for setting the default margins in Word 2007 and Word 2010 are the same, except for one button name we will point out. We used Word 2007 for our example. To set the default margins, click the Page Layout tab.

Click the Margins button and select Custom Margins from the drop-down menu.

NOTE: In Word 2010, the Default button is called Set As Default.

A confirmation dialog box displays making sure you want to change the default settings for Page Setup. Click Yes to accept your changes.

NOTE: When you click Yes on confirmation dialog box, the Page Setup dialog box is also closed.

If you need to temporarily change the margins to values other than the default values for a specific document in Word 2007 or Word 2010, click the Page Layout tab and either select a set of pre-defined margin values from the drop-down menu.

You can also select Custom Margins from the drop-down menu on the Margins button and enter the desired custom values in the Margins section on the Page Setup dialog box. Click OK to accept the different values, rather than the Default (or Set As Default) button.

Change the Panels in Ubuntu to Look and Act Like the Windows Taskbar

Ubuntu 10.04 includes a top panel and a bottom panel by default. If you prefer one panel at the bottom like the Windows Taskbar, this post shows you how to accomplish that.

To begin, delete the bottom panel. Right-click on the bottom panel and select Delete This Panel from the popup menu.

A confirmation dialog box displays to make sure you want to delete the panel. Click Delete.

Now, we need to move the top panel to the bottom. Right-click on the top panel and select Properties from the popup menu.

On the Panel Properties dialog box, select Bottom from the Orientation drop-down list. Click Close.

We will now add the Window List buttons to the bottom panel that will act like the program buttons on the Windows Taskbar. Right-click on the bottom panel and select Add to Panel from the popup menu.

On the Add to Panel dialog box, scroll until you find Window List. Select it and click Add. Click Close.

We will replace the Menu Bar on the bottom panel with the Main Menu to make it look and act more like the Start menu in Windows. Right-click anywhere on the Menu Bar and select Remove From Panel from the popup menu.

To add the Main Menu to the bottom panel, right-click on the bottom panel and select Add to Panel from the popup menu.

On the Add to Panel dialog box, scroll until you find Main Menu. Select it and click Add. Click Close.

To make the panel look like the Windows Taskbar, we need to move the Main Menu we just added to the far left. To do this, we must move the icons that are currently on the left, which are generally the Firefox icon and the Help icon. Right-click the Firefox icon and select Lock To Panel from the popup menu to remove the check mark. Do the same for the Help icon and for any other icons that may be there (except for the Main Menu icon).

Now that we have unlocked the icons on the far left, we can move the Main Menu into the far left corner. Right-click on the Main Menu icon and select Move from the popup menu. The cursor turns into a hand and you can immediately move the Main Menu icon just by moving the mouse all the way to the left.

NOTE: DO NOT click again until you have moved the icon to where you want it. Clicking after selecting Move sets the position of the icon.

Now we want to lock the Main Menu and the other icons to the panel so we can move the Window List buttons all the way over next to the icons. Right-click on the Main Menu icon and select Lock To Panel from the popup menu. Do the same for the Firefox icon, the Help icon and any other icons that may be there.

We can now move the Window List buttons to the left right next to the Firefox icon, the Help icon and any other icons that are there. This provides as much room as possible for Window List buttons on the bottom panel. Right-click on the left side of the Window List bar and select Move from the popup list. Again, the cursor turns into a hand. Move the mouse as far to the left as the Windows List buttons will go and click to set the position.

NOTE: It can be hard to see the three bars that make up the left side of the Window List bar. The easiest way to see the left edge of the Window List buttons is to start a program and minimize it.

To lock the Window List buttons in place, right-click on the left side of the Window List buttons and select Lock To Panel.

The bottom panel now should look and act like the Windows Taskbar.

If you want to restore the panels to their original configuration, open a Terminal window.

Enter the following commands at the command line.

$ sudo gconftool-2 –shutdown

$ sudo rm –rf .gconf/apps/panel

$ sudo pkill gnome-panel

NOTE: There are two dashes before shutdown in the first command, one dash before rf in the second command, and one dash between gnome and panel in the third command.

After entering the commands, enter Exit to close the Terminal window and restart your system.

These are just basic changes. The panels in Ubuntu are much more flexible than the Windows Taskbar. Many items can be easily added to the panels, removed from the panels and configured on the panels.

Change the Time Stamps on Files and Folders in Windows

Every file in Windows has three dates associated with it, the date the file was created, the date the file was last modified, and the date the file was last accessed.

You cannot manually change these dates in Windows, but there may be some occasions, such as when developing or testing software, where you do need to change one or more of these dates to a specific date. We found a free, portable tool, called FileTouch, that allows you to do this.

Download FileTouch from

NOTE: .NET Framework 3.5 must be installed to run FileTouch. Download it from

FileTouch does not need to be installed. Simply double-click the .exe file you downloaded to run it.

On the FileTouch main window, click the Add button to add files for which you want to change the dates and times.

On the dialog box that displays, click the Browse button to the right of the Folder edit box.

The Browse For Folder dialog box displays. Navigate to the folder containing the files you want to change. Click OK.

The files are added to the list of files on the Specific Files tab.

NOTE: You can add all files in the selected folder (All Files), files with a specific extension (Common Extensions), or specific files using a Custom Filter on the Wildcard Specification tab.

Click Add when you have selected the files to change.

The following help dialog box displays how to add a Custom Filter to select files.

Once you have selected the files to change, you need to select the new date and time to apply to the files. To select a date, click the arrow button next to the date edit box to display a calendar. Use the right and left arrow keys to navigate among the months. Click on a date to select it.

You can also select the current date by clicking the Calendar button to the right of the arrow button.

To select a time, click on the portion of the time you want to change and click the up arrow button or the down arrow button to change it.

You can also select the current time by clicking the Clock button to the right of the up arrow and down arrow buttons.

You can choose to change any or all of the date types associated with files. All the date types in the Select date types box are selected by default. To unselect any of the date types, select the desired check box so there is no check mark in the box.

If you change your mind about a file and want to remove it from the list, select the file and click the Remove button.

To change the dates on the selected files to the date and time you specified, click the Touch Dates button.

A confirmation dialog box displays telling you the dates and times were successfully changed. Click OK.

If you right-click on a file you changed and select Properties, you will see that the dates and times on the General tab have been changed.

You can use command line arguments to automate the changing of the dates and times on files using batch files. To see how to do this, select Command Line Arguments from the Help menu.

A help dialog box displays the way to usage, options, and examples for using the command line arguments. Click OK to close the dialog box.

You can easily view help about any part of FileTouch. Simply move the mouse over a part of the dialog box and then click the question mark button that displays.

A help dialog box displays information about that part of the dialog box. To close the dialog box, click OK.

To close FileTouch, select Exit from the File menu.

Remember that once you change the dates and times on a file, you cannot go back to the original dates that were on the file. However, once you access or modify a file for which you changed the dates, the Accessed and Modified dates do change again.

Open the Nautilus File Browser as Root in Ubuntu

Do you need to access files as root often in Ubuntu, but prefer to work in a graphical file browser? There are ways to open the Nautilus File Browser with root access.

One way is to press Alt + F2 to open the Run Application dialog box. Enter the following into the edit box and click Run.

gksu nautilus

The File Browser opens into the root home directory.

You can navigate to your own home directory by clicking on File System under Places.

Then, click the home folder icon and then the folder icon with your user name.

Another method of accessing the Nautilus File Browser as root, is to add an item to the Applications | System Tools menu to open Nautilus as root. To do this, open a Terminal window by selecting Accessories | Terminal from the Applications menu.

Enter the following line at the prompt and press Enter.

gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/Nautilus-root.desktop

Gedit opens with the Nautilus-root.desktop file active. Enter the following lines into the file and click Save.

Install Multiple Versions of Firefox to Test a Website

Mozilla Firefox is one of the more popular web browsers, and there are different versions used by many people for various uses. Therefore, if you are developing a website, you have to test how your website would look in the different versions of Firefox.

We found a free tool, called Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection, that allows you to install various standalone versions of Firefox, with the ability to run them all at the same time.

The Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 98, 98 SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7. However, Firefox versions 3.0 and above do not support Windows 98, ME and NT 4.0, so don’t expect Firefox versions 3.0 and above to get installed if you are running of any these Windows versions.

The Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection runs under the most restricted user accounts after installation; however, you need to install it in an account with administrator privileges.

To install Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection, double-click on the .exe file you downloaded.

If you see the Open File – Security Warning dialog box, click Run to continue.

If the User Account Control dialog box displays, click Yes to continue.

NOTE: You may not see this dialog box, depending on your User Account Control settings. See our post, Windows 7 – How to configure UAC (User Account Control), for more information.

The Welcome screen on the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection Setup Wizard displays. Click Next.

The Select Destination Location screen displays. If you want to install the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection to a different location other than the default location listed, use the Browse button to select another location. We accepted the default location. Click Next.

The Select Components screen displays. As of the writing of this post, there were five different versions of Firefox available in the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection and three add-ons/plugins. Select which versions of Firefox you want to install and which of the three add-ons/plugins you want to install by selecting the appropriate check boxes. There is also an option that allows you to display the version number for each version of Firefox in the title bar so you easily know which version you are running. To use this option, make sure the Display version number in titlebar check box has a check mark in it. Click Next to continue.

The Select Start Menu Folder screen displays. If you want the shortcuts to the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection to be placed in a different Start menu folder than the default folder listed, use the Browse button to select a different folder. You can also choose not to add shortcuts to the Start menu by selecting the Don’t create a Start Menu folder check box. Click Next to continue.

On the Select Additional Tasks screen, select whether you want to put icons for Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection on the Desktop (Create a desktop icon check box) and in the Quick Launch bar (Create a Quick Launch icon check box).

You can also choose to put Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection on the context menu for Windows Explorer by selecting the Appear in the context menu of Windows Explorer check box. This allows you to open a file, such as an HTML file, in all installed versions of Firefox by selecting one option on the context menu for that file.

To install Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection for all users of the computer, select the Install for all users check box.

Click Next to continue.

The Ready to Install screen displays with a summary of your installation choices. If you want to change any of your selections, click Back to go back to the appropriate screen. Click Install to continue.

The Installing screen displays the progress of the installation.

When the installation if done, the Completing the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection Setup Wizard screen displays. By default, all installed versions of Firefox open automatically when you close the Setup Wizard. If you don’t want some or any of them to open automatically, select the appropriate check boxes so there are no check marks in the boxes. Click Finish.

If you chose to open any of the versions of Firefox after installation, you may see the User Account Control dialog box for the Firefox Helper, which is a component of Firefox. Click Yes to continue.

Icons for all open versions of Firefox display on the Taskbar. They will all look the same, but, if you chose to display the version number in the title bar, you can tell which is which my moving your mouse over each icon. The text from the title bar displays above the icon. No matter what tab is currently selected, the version of Firefox is added to the end of the title for the web page on that tab.

You can start any combination of Firefox versions using the shortcuts on the Start menu.

You can also start any version of Firefox using the icons added to the desktop, if you chose to add icons to the desktop.

Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection also provides a dialog box that allows you to open a file or a website in all installed versions of Firefox. To access this dialog box, double-click the Utilu Firefox Collection icon on the desktop, or select the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection shortcut on the Start menu.

If the User Account Control dialog box displays, click Yes to continue.

The Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection dialog box displays. Enter the filenames or URLs you want to open in the Enter the filenames or URLs to open edit box. Filenames or URLs that include spaces must be enclosed in quotes (“).

You can open multiple files or URLs or a combination of both in all installed versions of Firefox. Read the instructions on the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection dialog box to learn how. Once you have entered all your filenames or URLs, click Next to open them.

If you have files for a website you want to test on your computer, you can easily open the site in all installed versions of Firefox. Right-click on the main file for the website and select UtiluMFC from the context menu. The main page for your website is opened up in every version of Firefox you installed.

There are two extensions (Firebug and Web Developer) and one plugin (Flash Player) that are installed if you selected them during installation. You may see a third extension installed. This extension seems to get installed when you choose to add the Firefox version number to the title bar of each window.

The Web Developer extension tools are available by right-clicking on a web page in Firefox and selecting Web Developer from the popup menu.

There is also a Web Developer toolbar containing the same tools.

The Web Developer extension also allows you to resize the Firefox window using common resolutions, such as 800×600 and 1024×768, directly from the menu. You can specify a custom size by selecting the Resize Window option. You can even add a custom size to the list of sizes on the menu using the Edit Resize Dimensions option.

Firebug is also a useful extension that allows you to edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page. The combination of the Utilu Mozilla Firefox Collection, the Web Developer extension, and the Firebug extension provide a useful toolbox for the successful development of websites.

Change the Default Save Location and File Format in Word 2007 and 2010

By default Word 2007 and Word 2010 save documents in the My Documents folder. If you want to save Word documents in a different location, you can change this default. The procedure is similar for Word 2007 and Word 2010. We used Word 2007 as an example and pointed out the differences in Word 2010.

To change the default save location and file format, click the Office button.

NOTE: In Word 2010, click the File tab.

On the Office menu, click the Word Options button.

NOTE: In Word 2010, click Options in the list on the left side of the File tab.

The Word Options dialog box displays. Click Save in the list on the left side of the dialog box.

In the Save documents section on the right side of the dialog box, click the Browse button to the right of the Default file location edit box.

The Modify Location dialog box displays. Navigate to the folder in which you want to save Word documents by default. Click OK.

The path to the selected folder is automatically inserted into the Default file location edit box.

If you need to share your Word documents with others who are using older versions of Word, you can change the file format selected by default when you save your Word documents. To change the default file format to the format supported by Word versions 97 through 2003, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) from the Save files in this format drop-down list.

To close the Word Options dialog box, click OK.

Now, when you save your documents, the folder selected in the Save in edit box and the default Save as type reflect the changes you made.

If you need to save specific files in a different location or as a different file type, you can still change the location where you save the file and the file format on the Save As dialog box for each file. The values you changed are only default initial values and can be changed, if needed.

Avoid Saving Remote Desktop Credentials in Windows 7

Remote Desktop Connection in Windows allows you to log on to any remote PC and access all of the programs, files, and network resources as though you were actually sitting in front of the remote computer.

We have previously written about accessing a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 computer remotely (see our post, Remotely Accessing a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 Computer). You can also remotely log onto a Windows 7 computer in a similar way.

However, in Windows 7, Remote Desktop Connection saves your Remote Desktop credentials, by default. This can be a security hazard, especially if you share the computer you are using to log onto the remote computer. This post explains how to disable the setting that allows Windows to save your credentials.

To access Remote Desktop Connection, open the Start menu, select All Programs, open the Accessories folder, and click on Remote Desktop Connection.

On the General tab on the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, there is a check box called Allow me to save credentials. Turning this check box on, allows you to tell Windows, when you provide your credentials on the next dialog box, to save the credentials you enter.

To close the Remote Desktop Connection without connecting to a remote computer, click the X button in the upper, right corner of the dialog box.

To remove the ability of Windows to save your credentials when you log into a remote computer, click the Start button and enter “gpedit.msc” (without the quotes) in the Search programs and files box. When Windows finds the gpedit.msc file, either press Enter or click the resulting link.

The Local Group Policy Editor dialog box displays. In the tree in the left pane, navigate to the following item:

User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Remote Desktop Services

Select the Remote Desktop Connection Client item under Remote Desktop Services. In the Setting list on the right, double-click on the Do not allow passwords to be saved setting.

On the dialog box that displays, select the Enabled radio button.

Click OK to close the dialog box for the Do not allow passwords to be saved setting.

To close the Local Group Policy Editor dialog box, select Exit from the File menu.

The Allow me to save credentials check box on the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box is still available. However, when you connect and you are asked for your credentials, you will not be able to tell Windows to remember the credentials you enter.

USB is a very complex protocol, must more complicated than Serial or Parallel, SPI and even I2C. USB uses only two wires but they are not used as ‘receive’ and ‘transmit’ like serial. Rather, data is bidirectional and differential – that is the data sent depends on the difference in voltage between the two data lines D+ and D.USB is also very structured. This is good for reverse engineering because it means that at least the format of packets is agreed upon and you won’t have to deal with check-sums. The bad news is it means you have to have software assistance to decode the complex packet structure. The good news is that every computer now made has a USB host core, that does a lot of the tough work for you, and there are many software libraries to assist.

Steps To Hack Kinect :

The first place to start is to see what devices and “interfaces” or “configurations” are available for the USB device. The nicest way to do this is to use lsusb (Linux) or system_profiler (Mac) which is a “list usb” program available for Linux and mac. Sadly, it does not exist for windows, so find a mac or linux computer or friend, you’ll only need it for a minute!For linux, run lsusb -vv (ultra verbose) for Mac, run system_profiler SPUSBDataType.There’s a bunch more stuff like USB keys and such installed but this is a good starting point. Note that the Kinect is actually 4 USB devices – a hub, a camera, a microphone (audio) and a motor. The hub is just an easy way for the device to combine three separate chips into a single cable. We’ll be investigating the Xbox NUI Motor since its the simplest. Note the Vendor ID = 0x045e and Product ID = 0x2b0. Every type USB device must have a unique VID and PID. The VID is the manufacturer. In this case, 0x045e is the VID for Microsoft. All Microsoft products will have that VID. Each product has a different PID, so all Kinect Motors use PID 0x02b0 this doesn’t differ between two Kinects, they’ll both have the same PID. The VID/PID are used as a way to have the proper driver find the product. Its a lot better than serial COM ports because COM ports change names but VID/PID are burned into the device firmware.

The next best thing to do after you’ve determined the VID/PID is to identify the descriptor of the device. A descriptor is a sort of ‘menu’ of what the device can do and how it likes to transfer data. In general, each device has one descriptor. Sometimes a device has more than one descriptor and you can choose which one you want but its not terribly common so we’re just going to ignore it.A fantastic way to get the descriptor without having to write any software is to run lsusb -vv on a linux computer. We haven’t found an equivalent for Windows or Mac, so find a friend with a Linux computer.You can see the VID and PID up there. Next we’ll look at bNumConfigurations (how many different descriptors we have) and lucky for us the number is 1. Next, look at the Interface Descriptor in particular, bNumEndpoints which is 0. This means there are no Endpoints.

This device has two Isochronous endpoints both of which are IN type (data going INto the computer). This makes sense: the Kinect has a IR depth camera and a normal VGA camera. Two cameras, two Endpoints. Of course, there is also a Control endpoint not mentioned here, the Control endpoint could be used to set stuff like aperture, gamma correction, any sort of built-in filter, etc.

For windows, however, there must be some sort of driver to ‘grab’ the device for us. Usually drivers are complex and have like, interfaces that plug into the operating system. Like the cameras would show up as a camera device, the microphones as an audio device. We’re not quite ready for a detailed driver, what we’ll do is make a ‘shell driver’ which has no operating system capabilities but does let us send commands to it from software.Again, Mac/Linux people have this built into the OS kernel so skip this part if you don’t use windows.Use libusb a USB library for this,which is available for windows as libusb-win32 go there and download it.

he fastest and easiest way we know to do this is to use LibUSB with a scripting language such as Python. There are LibUSB bindings for C and C++ and Perl but I happen to like Python so follow along!install PyUSB by downloading it and running python setup.py install in the expanded directory.

Use Python + LibUSB to send Control Endpoint packets with the command “ctrl_transfer( bmRequestType, bmRequest, wValue, wIndex, nBytes)”.This command can do both sending and receiving depending on what bmRequestType says (input or output). Still, there is a lot of options here. To send the right command you need to know the RequestType and the right Request and ther right Value as well as the Index and how many bytes to read or write.

For bmRequestType the value passed :

Bits 2, 3 and 4 are reserves so set them to 0.
The direction is set by bit #7, 0 is a ‘write’ out to the device, 1 is a ‘read’ from the device
The ‘type’ of message is two bits, 0 = Standard, 1 = Class, 2 = Vendor, 3 = Reserved. For many devices that are non-standard, you’ll probably want 2 for vendor type. If its a more standard type of device, like a camera or mic, try 0 or 1. 3 Is unused
The last two bits are usd to determine the recipient for the message 0 = Device, 1 = Interface, 2 = Endpoint, 3 = Other. Go with 0 to start, you can try 2 if there are other endpoints

The safest thing to do is read data (no way to overwrite anything or configure) you can do that by sending packets with 0b11000000(Read Vendor data from Device) = 0xC0.start by setting Index to 0 and iterating through all the byte values (255 different values) of bmRequestand the first few hundred wValues. Its pretty safe to just read random data to a USB device. Start by reading one byte to see if anything shows up, then increase the value.

Looks like Request values 0, 5, 16, 50, 54, 64, 80 and 112 all return some sort of data. The rest had nothing to read

OK lots of data, but what does it mean? This is where some guessing based on the device itself would come in handy. I’m terribly lazy though and if given an option to avoid a lot of guesswork, I’ll take it!

Reverse-engineering the Kinect is a little easier since we have a known-working system (Xbox 360). Instead of guessing commands, we can just see what commands the Xbox sends and ‘replay them’This requires being able to listen into those commands, however. With protocols such as SPI, Serial, Parallel and i2c, you can listen in with any logic analyzer or oscilloscope. USB is fast/complex enough to require its own kind of logic analyzer. The one we’ll be using is called the Beagle480 from TotalPhase. This is the ‘high speed’ USB analyzer, which we splurged on. (For many devices, Low/Full speed is fast enough, and there’s a lower cost analyzer available.)The USB analyzer acts as a ‘tap’ that plugs in between the Xbox and the Kinect. A computer is conneted as well. The computer receives all the data being transmitted into memory and logs it.

From left to right there is a DIN connector, USB A connector and USB B connector. The Xbox connects to the USB B and the Kinect connects to the USB A. The DIN connector is for other kinds of data sniffing (like SPI or i2c)On the other side, a single B connector which goes to the listening computer

The best way we’ve found to get the right data is to make sure to get even the ‘enumeration’ (initialization) packets so plug in the listening computer and start up the software. Then plug in the other end to the devices you want to sniff.

OK now that you’ve eaten, lets open up the enuminit.tdc file. This is the full enumeration and initialization.

Remember that when we log the data, there’s a lot of it that we can then pare down!

Let start by remembering that there are four devices (hub, camera, mic, motor) but we only need to listen to one (motor). Click on theBus tab on the lower right

We have a few devices. Lets explore each one

If you click on Unconfigured device (0) you’ll see that it was not captured. This is probably because I jiggled the cable when inserting it so it started to create a device and then got disconnected. Its not important

Click on (1) This device is a Class device type USB Hub. That’s the internal hub. We can ignore this as well

Device #4 has a PID of 688, that’s in decimal. If we convert it to hex we get 0x02b0 – this is the Motor device!

Now we can filter so that only this device’s logs are shown

Our log screen is much shorter now

You can see that there’s some initialization and then just two repeating motifs: a 1 byte message alternated with a 10 byte message.

For the motor to move according to the xbox’s wishes, there must be some command sent from the xbox to the kinect. Lets filter some more to see just commands sent to the device

Go to the LiveFilter and select Host-to-Device

Now we’ve really pared it down. There are only four commands sent to the kinect motor, since the motor moves during initialization we can just try each one. Lets look at each command

Command 1 has a bRequest of 0×06 and a wValue of 4, the wLength is 0 which means no data is written, the entire command is theRequest and Value

Command #2 uses the same bRequest but with a different wValue of 0×01

Command #3 is a different bRequest of 0×31 and a wValue of 0xffd0

Command #4 is the same bRequest and a wValue of 0xfff0

Now we’ve determined there are two request commands we can send. One is 0×06 and the other is 0×31

Time to experiment!

Command #1 & 2 – LED blinky!

We’ll edit our python code to just send command #1 and see what happens. From our logs we know that for sending commands from host-to-device, we should use bRequestType of 0×40 (verify this by looking at the bmRequestType bits of the command packets),wIndex and wLength of zero

For command #1, set bRequest to 0×06 and a wValue to 4. The final argument is now an empty array [] to indicate no data is transmitted

We ran our python code and…nothing happened!

OK well maybe that was some initialization command. Lets replace it with the next command #2, set bRequest to 0×06 and a wValueto 1

We ran this command and the motor didn’t move but the LED stopped blinking.

For fun we ran the previous command again and the LED started blinking again.

Now we have an idea: maybe this bRequest 0×6 controls the LED?

On your own, continue this line of thought by trying different wValues from 0 on up to see what other wValues do, keep track of them all in a notebook or project file.

Command #3 & 4 – Let’s move!

Having conquered one of the commands, we’ll now tackle the other one. Try to replicate command #3, set bRequest to 0×31 and awValue to 0xffd0 (also known as -48 for a 2-byte word)

Running the python script made the motor move its ‘head’ down.

Now try command #4, 0xfff0 (also known as -16 for a 2-byte word)

This makes the head move up. Now we have both the motor and LED under our control! Here is a video we shot a few minutes after getting the motor working, using a python script to move it up and down.

Read command 0×32 that we fuzzed with for a bit. Its also in the logs, be sure to set your filter to show both Host-to-Device and Device-to-Host since its a ‘read’ not a ‘write’

We were pretty close with our commands, it looks like we should be reading only 10 bytes. It also looks like the data doesn’t really change much except for a bit further down…

The 7′th byte changes a lot right after we send it that bRequest 0×31 (motor movement). That implies that this data read is somehow affected by the motor, possibly a motor feedback byte?

Checking out a tear-down of the device (from iFixit) we see that there is an ‘inclinometer’/accelerometer (Kionix KXSD9). The datasheet indicates it is used for image stabilization, and it has 3 axes (X Y and Z) with 10 bits of data per axis.

Lets continuously read that data

Shaking the Kinect while running the script you’ll see clearly that the data changes with movement.

To identify the accelerometer axes, rotate it only one way at a time and note what changes. You can also see how this data is in bytes but the accelerometer data should be a signed word because there are flips from 0xfff7 to 0×0007 which would indicate a negative to positive conversion.

We can cast two bytes to a signed value by ‘hand’ (in C this is a little easier, we know)

Install and Use Cairo Dock in Ubuntu

We have discussed a couple of different dock programs available for Ubuntu to make it easier to launch programs. See our posts, Install and Use a Mac OS X-Like Application Launcher in Ubuntu and Enable a “Windows 7 Superbar” in Ubuntu 10.04.

We have even talked about a program that allows you to dock programs to the system tray in our post, Dock any Application to the System Tray in Ubuntu.

We have found another dock program called Cairo Dock, that is fully configurable and customizable and serves as a panel replacement, also. You can easily add applets to the dock. Many applets, plugins, views, and dialogs are available in the plugins package for Cairo Dock.

NOTE: Cairo Dock is now officially called Glx-Dock. However, we will call it Cairo Dock in this post for those of you who have heard of it before and are familiar with that name.

To install Cairo Dock and the plugins, select Administration | Synaptic Package Manager from the System menu.

On the Synaptic Package Manager dialog box, enter “cairo dock” (without the quotes) in the yellow search box. As you type, the results display in the list below the search box. Select cairo-dock from the resulting list.

Click the check box next to cairo-dock and select Mark for Installation from the popup menu.

A dialog box displays showing you a list of other packages that must be installed in addition to the cairo-dock package. This list includes the cairo-dock-plug-ins package that provides many useful add-ons you can place on the dock. Click Mark to have the Synaptic Package Manager automatically mark these packages for installation.

Click the Apply button on the Synaptic Package Manager dialog box to apply all the marked changes.

The Summary dialog box displays giving you a summary of what will be installed. Click Apply.

The Downloading Package Files dialog box displays, which is followed by a dialog box displaying the installation progress.

When the downloading and installation is done, the Changes applied dialog box displays, if you have not previously selected the Automatically close after the changes have been successfully applied check box when installing other software. Click Close.

To close the Synaptic Package Manager, select Quit from the File menu.

To start Cairo Dock, select Accessories | GLX-Dock (Cairo-Dock with OpenGL) from the Applications menu.

Shortly after starting Cairo Dock, a message displays about removing the black rectangle around the dock by activating a compositing manager. To have Cairo Dock do this automatically for you, click the green check mark.

Another message displays to make sure you want Cairo Dock to automatically activate a compositing manager. Click the green check mark.

Here is the initial dock that displays. Common programs and utilities are added to the dock to start you off.

The easy way to add programs to the dock is to drag and drop them from the menu. In the following image, we are dragging the OpenOffice.org Word Processor to the dock from the Office menu on the Applications menu.

The program is added to the dock in the location to where you were dragging it.

You can modify any of the launchers on the dock. To do this, right-click on the desired launcher and select Modify this launcher from the popup menu. You can also remove a launcher using the same menu by selecting Remove this launcher.

A dialog box displays containing a list of all the launchers on the left and the properties for the selected launcher on the right. Edit the desired properties. If you want to modify a different launcher, select the desired launcher from the list on the left and modify its properties on the right. When you are done, click Apply to apply your changes. Click Quit to close the dialog box.

There are many options available for customizing Cairo dock. To access the settings, right-click on any launcher on the dock and select Cairo-Dock | Configure from the popup menu.

NOTE: There are too many options to discuss here, but we will give you an idea of what’s available.

The Cairo-Dock configuration dialog box displays with the Behavior tab active. This tab allows you to specify where to place the dock, when the dock is visible, the effect used when the dock is hidden, how sub-docks display, among other options.

The Appearance tab allows you to specify how the icons look, the size of the icons, and the order of the icons. You can also choose the view for the main docks.

The Add-ons tab allows you to choose from various applets you can add to your dock. There is a link in the bottom, right corner that takes you to a site where you can download additional applets.

The Themes tab allows you to select various themes you can apply to the dock.

There is an advanced mode for the configuration dialog box, accessed by clicking the Advanced Mode button in the lower, left corner of the dialog box.

The Advanced Mode is supposed to allow you to tweak every single parameter of the dock. However, all we found on the Advanced Mode dialog box is the complete list of items you can add to the dock. The settings don’t seem to be available. It is easy to go back to the settings, though. Simply click the Simple Mode button at the bottom of the dialog box. The four tabs discussed above display again.

You can move launchers and applets to other docks, if your main dock gets too crowded. To do this, right-click on the launcher you want to move and select Move to another dock from the popup menu. A submenu displays, listing the available docks and sub-docks. Select a dock or sub-dock from the list, or select New main dock to create a new dock using the selected launcher.

We created a new dock from the OpenOffice.org Word Processor launcher we had added to the main dock. This new dock was added to the top of the screen.

When you have multiple docks, you can choose, under the Cairo-Dock option, to configure the selected dock (Configure this dock option) or configure Cairo Dock in general (Configure option).

We chose to configure the new dock only. On the Behavior tab, we chose Always on top from the Visibility drop-down menu.

You can also add sub-docks, new main docks, separators, and custom launchers (for items not on the menu) manually using the Add submenu when you right-click on any launcher on the dock. You can add as many launchers as you like. Each one operates independently. You can make one for launchers, one for applets, etc., and customize each one as you like.

To close Cairo Dock, right-click on any launcher on the dock and select Cairo-Dock | Quit from the popup menu.

Prevent the Insert Key from Turning on Overtype Mode in Word

If you tend to accidentally press the Insert key when pressing the Delete key in Word, this tip will be useful for you. You can turn off the Insert key permanently in Word, if you decide you don’t need it and don’t want to keep accidentally going into Overtype mode.

This post shows you how to turn off the Insert key in Word 2003, Word 2007, and Word 2010. In all three versions, there is a way to still use Overtype mode, if needed, without using the Insert key.

Word 2003

To disconnect the Insert key from the Overtype mode in Word 2003, select Customize from the Tools menu.

On the Customize dialog box, click the Options tab and then click the Keyboard button.

The Customize Keyboard dialog box displays. In the Specify a command section, select All Commands in the Categories box and select Overtype in the Commands box. In the Specify keyboard sequence section, select Insert in the Current keys box. Click Remove.

If you want to return to the default keyboard settings, click Reset All. This restores the Insert key as the method of activating the Overtype mode.

To close the Customize Keyboard dialog box, click Close.

Click Close on the Customize dialog box.

You can still turn on the Overtype mode in Word 2003 without using the Insert key. To do this, double-click on the OVR box on the Status bar at the bottom of the Word 2003 window. The letters turn black, indicating the feature is active.

If the Status bar is not visible at the bottom of the screen, select Options from the Tools menu.

On the Options dialog box, make sure the View tab is active. In the Show section, select the Status bar check box so there is a check mark in it. Click OK.

Now, you can turn on and off the Overtype mode easily without using the Insert key.

Word 2007 and 2010

The procedure for disconnecting the Insert key from the Overtype mode in Word 2007 and Word 2010 is the same except for a couple of differences we will point out. If you are using Office 2007, click the Office button.

If you are using Word 2010, click the File tab.

In Word 2007, click the Word Options button on the Office menu.

In Word 2010, click Options in the list on the left side of the File tab.

Click the Advanced option in the list on the left side of the Word Options dialog box.

To disconnect the Insert key from the Overtype mode, select the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode check box so there is no check mark in it. If you want to turn on Overtype mode without using the Insert key, also select the Use overtype mode check box so there IS a check mark in it.

To close the Word Options dialog box, click OK.

If you change your mind, simply select one or both of the check boxes on the Advanced screen on the Word Options dialog box again.

There is an easier method for turning on and off Overtype mode in Word 2007 and 2010 without using the Insert key. You can add a button to the Status bar that allows you to turn Overtype on and off with one click. The procedure for adding this button is the same for both versions of Word.

Right-click on the Status bar at the bottom of the Word window and select Overtype from the popup menu.

NOTE: The popup menu does not automatically go away. You must click anywhere off the menu to close it.

A button is added to the Status bar that will say either Insert or Overtype. When it says Insert, you are in insert mode and you will not type over any text after your cursor. Click the button to switch modes.

When it says Overtype, you will type over any text after your cursor.

Now, you can safely use the Delete key, or any other keys around the Insert key, without the fear of typing over your carefully worded text by accident.

Easily Tile Windows Vertically and Horizontally in Ubuntu with X Tile

If you have several windows open at once in Ubuntu or if you compare items in separate windows often, such as products in web pages or source code if you are a programmer, you may want to install the Gnome applet X Tile.

It allows you to select a number of windows and tile them in different configurations. You can also define keyboard shortcuts and panel launchers for specific window configurations.

NOTE: X Tile can also be a standalone application that can be installed in KDE.

Download X Tile from

http://www.giuspen.com/x-tile/#downl.

Be sure you download the debian/ubuntu package.

When the Opening dialog box displays, select Save File and click OK.

On the Enter name of file to save to dialog box, navigate to the folder where you want to save the .deb file and click Save. We saved the file in the Downloads folder.

From the Places menu, select an option to open the File Browser and navigate to the folder where you saved the .deb file, as needed. We selected Downloads since that will take us directly to where we saved the file.

To start the installation, double-click on the filename in the File Browser.

The Package Installer dialog box displays. Click the Install Package button.

A dialog box displays the progress of the installation.

When the installation is finished, click the Close button to close the dialog box.

Close the Package Installer dialog box by selecting Quit from the File menu.

Open X Tile by selecting Accessories | X Tile from the Applications menu.

The X Tile dialog box displays containing a list of all the windows currently open on your desktop. Select the windows you want to tile and click a tile button on the toolbar that corresponds to the arrangement you want.

We chose to tile our four windows in a Quad arrangement.

You can add X Tile to a panel for easier access. To do this, right-click on a panel and select Add to Panel from the popup menu. We chose to add X Tile to our top panel.

On the Add to Panel dialog box, select X Tile in the list of items and click Add.

NOTE: Do not close the Add to Panel dialog box yet.

Left-click on the launcher on the panel to open the X Tile main window. To quickly access tiling options, right-click on the launcher and select an option from the popup menu.

You can also add launchers to your panel for specific tiling configurations. For this example, we will add a launcher for Quad configuration. Return to the Add to Panel dialog box. Select Custom Application Launcher from the beginning of the list and click Add.

The Create Launcher dialog box displays. Enter the following information:

Name: Tile All Quad
Command: x-tile –tile-all-quad
Comment: Quad-tile all open windows

NOTE: In the Command edit box, there should be two dashes before “tile-all-quad.”

To change the icon for the launcher, click the icon button on the dialog box.

The Choose an icon dialog box displays. Navigate to the /usr/share/pixmaps folder and select x-tile.svg from the list. Click Open.

The new icon displays on the icon button. Click OK.

Click Close on the Add to Panel dialog box.

There is now a Tile All Quad launcher on the panel next to the X Tile launcher.

We will also add a keyboard shortcut to tile all windows in the quad configuration. To do this, select Preferences | Keyboard Shortcuts from the System menu.

On the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box, click Add.

The Custom Shortcut dialog box displays. Enter the following information and click Apply.

Name: X Tile – Tile All Quad
Command: x-tile –tile-all-quad

NOTE: Again, there should be two dashes before “tile-all-quad.”

In the Shortcut column, “Disabled” displays for the new shortcut. Click on “Disabled” to change it to “New shortcut.”

Type the desired keyboard shortcut for the new Tile All Quad action. We used Shift + Ctrl + Q.

Click Close to close the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box. Now, you can use either the launcher on the panel or the new keyboard shortcut to tile all open windows in the quad configuration.

The following is a list of the commands for X Tile. You can apply these to custom application launchers and/or keyboard shortcuts in the same way we have described for the x-tile –tile-all-quad command.

NOTE: The “triangle” commands are for arranging three windows. Two of the windows are placed in the direction indicated in the command. For example, the x-tile –tile-all-triangle-up command puts two of the windows on top and the third on the bottom.

x-tile –tile-all-quad (skip main window, directly quad tile all opened windows)
x-tile –maximize-all (skip main window, directly maximize all opened windows)

To access options for X Tile, select Preferences from the Edit menu.

The Preferences dialog box displays. If you don’t want the X Tile main window to close after selecting a tiling option, click the Exit After Tile check box so there is no check mark in it. Select the Do Not List Minimized Windows check box if you don’t want to tile minimized windows.

By default, X Tile tiles windows in all workspaces. If you only want to tile the windows in the current workspace, select the Only Current Workspace check box.

To define a blacklist of windows to never show in the list of available windows in the X Tile main window, select Filter from the File menu.

The Rows to Filter dialog box displays. Click the Add button (with the plus sign).

The Add Row dialog box displays. Select an open window from the list and click OK.

The window is added to the list on the Rows to Filter dialog box. Click Close.

You will notice that the selected window is no longer in the list of open windows in the X Tile main window.

If you add open windows to your desktop while X Tile is open,, you can refresh the list of open windows in the X Tile main window by selecting Reload from the File menu.

If you work with a lot of windows in Ubuntu often, X-tile is a useful utility for organizing your desktop and improving your productivity.

Prevent the Thumbs.db File From Being Generated in Windows XP

When you view the contents of a folder in “Thumbnail” or “Filmstrip” view in Windows XP, a system file, called Thumbs.db is generated automatically. This file is placed in each folder you access and contains a copy of each of the tiny preview images generated for any images files contained in that folder.

The Thumbs.db file in each folder allows the image files to be loaded quickly the next time you browse that folder. The Thumbs.db file also stores your settings with regards to the Thumbnail and Filmstrip views.

Thumbs.db is a hidden system file, and may show up in places where it’s not wanted. You may want zip up a folder of images and distribute them to a friend or upload them to your website. Since Thumbs.db is a hidden system file, you may not even notice it in your folders and you may be sending it along with the images without realizing it.

This post shows you how to prevent the Thumbs.db file from being generated and also how to view hidden files and folder on your system, so you can see if any of your folders have the Thumbs.db file in them.

To prevent your computer from generating Thumbs.db files in the future, select Folder Options in the Control Panel on the Start menu.

If you have a My Computer window open, you can also select Folder Options from the Tools menu.

To display hidden files and folder on your system, so you can find Thumbs.db files that have already been generated, scroll down until you find the Hidden files and folders section. Select the Show hidden files and folders radio button.

To prevent any Thumbs.db files from being generated in the future, select the Do not cache thumbnails check box right above the Hidden files and folders section.

Click OK to accept your changes and close the Folder Options dialog box. Now, you should not find any new Thumbs.db files in any of your folders. Turning on the Show hidden files and folders option allows you to find any Thumbs.db files that current exist in your system so you can delete them, if desired. Once deleted, they will not return, if you have selected the Do not cache thumbnails option.

However, now, if you open a folder that contains a large quantity of image files, or very large image files, it will take a long time for that folder to load even if you have previously accessed it because the thumbnail images were not cached in the Thumbs.db file.

Display a List of Recently Installed Software Packages in Ubuntu

There may be times when you need to view a list of the packages that were recently installed in Ubuntu for troubleshooting purposes or maybe just to find a program you installed that does not display in the menu. There are two ways to find out what was installed recently. You can view recently installed packages by date using the Synaptic Package Manager and from the command prompt using a Terminal window.

Use the Synaptic Package Manager

To view software packages installed recently using the Synaptic Package Manager, select Administration | Synaptic Package Manager from the System menu.

On the Synaptic Package Manager dialog box, select History from the File menu.

The History dialog box displays. All packages installed and removed using the Synaptic Package Manager are listed by month and date. Click the arrow to the left of a month in the left pane to display dates within that month on which software packages were installed or removed. Click a date to view what packages were installed or removed on that date in the right pane.

NOTE: Only software packages installed using the Synaptic Package Manager are displayed on the History dialog box. If you installed other software using other methods, such as the Ubuntu Software Center, they are not listed here.

To close the History dialog box, click the Close button.

To close the Synaptic Package Manager, select Quit from the File menu.

Use a Terminal window

If you prefer working in a Terminal window, you can get a list of installed software packages using the command line. To do this, select Accessories | Terminal from the Applications menu.

Enter the following command at the prompt and press Enter.

cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep “\ install\ “

NOTE: There is a space after each of the backslashes.

This command displays entries from the dpkg.log file that match the term “ install “, including the spaces before and after. The “install” entries indicate packages that have been fully installed.

All the “install” entries in the dpkg.log file are displayed in the Terminal window, the most recent entries listed last.

If the dates in the dpkg.log file don’t go back as far as you need, there may be other dpkg log files. The dpkg.log file is rotated and archived weekly. You can find available dpkg log files by listing the contents of the /var/log directory.

To do this, enter the following command at the prompt and press Enter.

$ ls –l /var/log

NOTE: After “ls ” is one dash and a lowercase “L” followed by another space.

Notice that you get a listing of all the logs in the /var/log directory, not just the logs for dpkg. To display only the log files for dpkg, enter the following command at the prompt and press Enter.

$ ls –l /var/log/dpkg*

NOTE: Again, after the “ls ” is one dash and a lowercase “L” followed by another space.

Only one dpkg.log file displays in our system, because it is a new system we installed recently. To open the dpkg.log file for viewing, enter the following command at the prompt and press Enter.

$ gedit /var/log/dpkg.log

The dpkg.log file opens in gedit. All packages are listed, not only the ones with the “install” status. This makes it harder to find the fully installed packages.

TIP: Using the cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep “\ install\ “ command is probably the best way of viewing a list of installed packages, because only “install” entries in the log file are displayed. If you need to view installed packages that are older than those available in the dpkg.log file, simply replace the dpkg.log filename in the cat command with other dpkg log filenames you find using the ls –l /var/log/dpkg* command.

To close gedit, select Quit from the File menu.

You may notice that the list generated using the Terminal window is more complete. Programs installed using any method are listed, not just programs installed using the Synaptic Package Manager.

Use Multiple Workspaces in Ubuntu

If you have a lot of programs open at one time, it might be helpful if you can split them up among multiple workspaces. Ubuntu allows you to move open programs to different workspaces. Workspaces are like virtual screens you can switch among. The same desktop, panels, and menus display in every workspace.

However, each workspace can have different applications running inside it, and those applications keep running when you switch to a different workspace. This tool that allows you to have multiple workspaces is called the Workspace Switcher, and is found in the lower, right corner of your screen on the bottom panel next to the Trash icon, by default.

There are several settings you can customize for the Workspace Switcher. To access these settings, right-click on the Workspace Switcher and select Preferences from the popup menu.

The first set of options determines how the workspaces are displayed on the switcher. If you select the Show only the current workspace option, you must use the keyboard shortcuts to switch among workspaces. To switch to the workspace to the right of the current workspace, press Ctrl + Alt + right arrow.

To switch to the workspace to the left of the current workspace, press Ctrl + Alt + left arrow. These arrow keyboard shortcut keys work according to the layout of your workspaces on the panel. If you have your workspaces displayed vertically instead of horizontally, use Ctrl + Alt + up arrow and Ctrl + Alt + down arrow to switch among the workspaces.

You can change the layout of the workspaces on the panel by selecting the Show all workspaces in X rows option and specifying the Number of workspaces. For example, if you want to display 4 workspaces vertically on the panel, enter 4 for the Number of workspaces and enter 4 as the value for X in the Show all workspaces in X rows edit box.

You can also change the name of each workspace. For example, you might have all office programs in one workspace. You can rename that workspace to Office. You could use another workspace for all your work in a Terminal window, and call that workspace Terminal. Simply click on a Workspace name in the list twice slowly, until the name is highlighted. Type the desired name and press Enter.

If you want to display the name of each workspace on the Workspace Switcher, select the Show workspace names in switcher check box.

To move a minimized program to another workspace, right-click on the program’s icon or button on the panel and select Move to Another Workspace from the popup menu. A submenu displays, listing all available workspaces. The currently displays workspace is grayed out. Select a workspace name from the submenu to move the program to that workspace.

NOTE: If the program is open and not minimized, right-click on the title bar of the program to access the Move to Another Workspace option.

If you have a program open that you want displayed all the time, no matter which workspace is being displayed, right-click on the program’s icon on the panel, or on the title bar of the program, and select Always on Visible Workspace from the popup menu. For example, you may want a Terminal window available on all workspaces, if you use it often.

You can use the Workspace Switcher to categorize your open applications. For example, use one workspace for internet related programs, such as web browsers and email programs. Use another workspace for office programs, such as OpenOffice. Managing your open programs using workspaces can keep you organized and more productive.

Remove Dead and Duplicate Bookmark Links in Your Web Browsers

If you surf the web extensively, like a lot of people, you probably have bookmarked more websites than you can count. At the time, each bookmark seemed necessary and you probably thought you would get back that site at some point.

Well, there are probably a lot of bookmarks you never use anymore and are actually dead links. You can either ignore them or manually go through your collection of bookmarks checking each one. None of us has the time to do that!

There is an easier method of identifying dead links among your bookmarks and removing them. AM-DeadLink is a free tool that cleans up dead links in Internet Explorer Favorites, and Firefox, Opera, and Netscape Bookmarks, and identifies duplicates. It does not help you organize your bookmarks.

NOTE: Before using AM-DeadLink to remove bookmarks, we recommend that you backup your bookmarks. If you are using Firefox, you can backup just your bookmarks as we discuss in our post, Backup and Recover Bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox. Or you can backup your profile, including your bookmarks, as we discuss in our post, Backup Firefox and Thunderbird Profiles. If you are using a different browser, refer to the help for that browser for information about backing up bookmarks.

Download AM-DeadLink from

To install AM-DeadLink, double-click on the .exe file you downloaded.

If the User Account Control dialog box displays, click Yes to continue.

NOTE: You may not see this dialog box, depending on your User Account Control settings. See our post, Windows 7 – How to configure UAC (User Account Control), for more information.

The AM-DeadLink setup wizard displays. Click Next.

Read through the License Agreement and select the I accept the agreement radio button. Click Next.

If you want to install AM-DeadLink to a different location, use the Browse button to select a location. We accepted the default location.

NOTE: You can install AM-DeadLink as a portable program so you can take it with you, if desired. To do so, select the Install as portable application onto your USB-Stick radio button. We tested it both ways, so you will see some screen shots that say “Portable” in the title bar, and some that don’t. AM-DeadLink works the same either way.

Click Next.

If you want to put the shortcuts for AM-DeadLink in a different Start menu folder, use the Browse button to select a folder. We accepted the default folder. Click Next.

The Create a desktop icon check box is selected by default. If you don’t want a shortcut for AM-DeadLink on the desktop, select the check box so there is no check mark in it. Click Next.

The Ready to Install screen displays with a summary of your selections. Click Install to begin the installation.

The Launch AM-DeadLink check box is selected by default on the Completing the AM-DeadLink Setup Wizard screen. This starts AM-DeadLink immediately after the installation finishes. If you do not want AM-DeadLink to start yet, select the check box so there is no check mark in it. To continue with these instructions on how to use AM-DeadLink, leave the check box selected. Click Finish.

The Language dialog box displays. Select the desired language from the drop-down list and click OK.

The AM-DeadLink main window displays. Internet Explorer is the browser selected by default. Select the browser for which you want to find dead and duplicate links from the drop-down list below the menu bar. For the example in this post, we selected Firefox.

NOTE: You can also read links in from .URL files, comma-separated text files, tab-delimited text files, and HTML files. For example, if you have a backup of your bookmarks from Firefox in an HTML file, as discussed in our post, Backup and Recover Bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox, you can select that file to remove dead and duplicate links in the file. The next time you import the file, you will have a cleaner bookmarks list.

After selecting Firefox, AM-DeadLink reminded us to close Firefox before continuing. Click Continue.

To begin checking your bookmarks, click the Check Bookmarks button.

The status bar at the bottom of the AM-DeadLink main window displays how many of the bookmarks have been processed.

NOTE: This process can take a long time, depending on how many bookmarks you have.

Once the bookmarks have been checked, you can sort the bookmarks so the ones with errors are listed first. To do this, click the Sort Bookmarks with errors to the top of list button on the toolbar.

The bookmarks with dead links are listed first, allowing you to easily deal with them.

Double-clicking on a link in the list opens it in a browser. You can either use the internal browser, which displays in the bottom half of the AM-DeadLink main window, or you can use the default browser on your computer. We chose to use our default browser so we can see the web page full size. To use your own default browser, select Use internal browser from the Options menu so there is no check mark to the left of the option.

When we double-clicked on one of the links with an error, AM-DeadLink attempted to open it in the default browser. The website on which the page was originally located, displayed a message that nothing was found.

NOTE: Since we opened Firefox while AM-DeadLink is working with the bookmarks in Firefox, the following message displays in a red strip at the top of the Firefox window.

The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.

This is fine because all we want to do is view any error that displays when trying to access a dead link.

We decided to edit the link to go to the website’s home page. To edit a link, right-click on the link and select Properties from the popup menu.

The Properties dialog box displays. Change the name used for the link in the Name edit box and change the URL for the website in the Url edit box. Click Change.

When you have changed a link, you can have AM-DeadLink check the link again. To do this, select the changed link in the list and select Check selected bookmarks from the Bookmarks menu. You can also press Ctrl + K to check selected bookmarks.

If you have changed the URL for the link to one that is valid, the Status of that link changes to OK.

We decided to delete the other two dead links. To delete links, select the links to be deleted. You can use the Shift and Ctrl keys to select multiple links, just like you would in Windows Explorer. Once you have selected the links to be deleted, right-click on any of the selected links and select Delete from the popup menu.

A confirmation dialog box displays, making sure you really want to delete the selected links. Click Yes to delete them.

You can export the list of bookmark links from AM-DeadLink into a text file if you want to keep the list. To do this, select Export from the File menu.

NOTE: This exported list can be imported into AM-DeadLink again using the drop-down list below the menu bar that we discussed earlier in this post.

The Export to file dialog box displays. Specify the fields, or columns, you want included in the exported file by selecting the desired check boxes in the Fields box. Indicate whether you want a comma or a tab between each field by selecting Comma-separated or Tab-delimited, respectively, in the Format box. Click Export.

The Save As dialog box displays. Navigate to the location where you want to save the file. Enter a name for the file in the File name edit box, adding a .txt extension to the end. Click Save.

You can also search for specific links using the Find command on the Search menu.

AM-DeadLink allows you to remove duplicate links from your bookmarks list. To find the duplicate links in your list, select Find duplicates from the Bookmarks menu.

NOTE: You can also click the Find duplicates button on the toolbar.

All links with duplicates are listed, while all other links are temporarily hidden. To select the duplicate link for each link in the list, click the Select all duplicates but one button right above the list.

You will notice that every other link is selected. To delete the duplicate links, right-click on any one of the selected links and select Delete from the popup menu.

Again, a confirmation dialog box displays, making sure you want to delete the duplicate links. Click Yes to delete the links.

To close AM-DeadLink, select Exit from the File menu.

AM-DeadLink is a useful tool for keeping your bookmarks list free of dead and duplicate links, but, remember, it is not a bookmark organizer.

Forcefully Close a Program in Ubuntu

We have previously written about how to kill a non-responsive program in Windows (see our post, Quickly Kill Non-Responsive Programs in Windows 7 and Vista). If you are an Ubuntu user, there is a similar method of terminating non-responsive programs.

Instead of logging out or rebooting to end the program, there are a couple of commands you can use in a Terminal window to kill programs that are not responding. There is also a graphical way to kill programs using the System Monitor.

NOTE: The first two methods work in other Linux distributions as well. The commands used in these methods are general Linux commands. The System Monitor, discussed in the third method, is specific to the Gnome desktop environment, but not to Ubuntu. If you are running Gnome in a different Linux distribution, you should have access to the System Monitor. There are equivalent tools in other desktop environments, such as KSysGuard in KDE.

Use the killall Command in the Terminal Window

To use the killall command to kill a program, open a Terminal window by selecting Accessories | Terminal from the Applications menu.

NOTE: You can also open a Terminal window by pressing Alt + F2 to access the Run Application dialog box. Enter “gnome-terminal” (without the quotes) in the edit box and click Run.

To view a list of running processes, enter the following text at the prompt and press Enter.

$ ps -A

A list of processes displays with their associated PIDs (process IDs). Look through the list to find the name of the process that matches the program you want to kill. The program is most likely listed towards the end of the list, where the programs run most recently are displayed. For our example, we used Firefox as the process to kill. The firefox-bin process is the one to kill, with a PID of 5039.

To kill a process using its PID, enter the “killall” command (without the quotes) at the prompt, followed by a space, and then the corresponding PID from the generated list. Press Enter.

Killing a process using its PID does not always work. If it doesn’t work for you, you can use the process name to kill the process. To do this, enter the “killall” command (without the quotes) at the prompt, followed by a space, and then the corresponding process name from the generated list. For Firefox, the process name is firefox-bin.

NOTE: Killing a program using its process name, only works for executable files (i.e., runnable programs) that are kept open during execution. Programs that run in the background cannot be killed using the process name.

Using killall without specifying a signal as a parameter, as in the examples above, allows the program to clean up before terminating, using the SIGTERM signal by default. If this does not work, you can specify the –9 (SIGKILL) signal. This forces the program to terminate and does not allow it to clean up before doing so. It is recommended that you try killing a program without the –9 signal first to give it a chance to exit cleanly.

If you need to use the -9 signal, enter it between the “killall” command and the name of the process (or the PID) with a space after killall and after the -9 signal, as shown below.

$ killall -9 firefox-bin

NOTE: There is one dash before the 9.

To close the Terminal window, type exit at the prompt and press Enter.

Use the xkill Command on a Program’s Window

You can also run the xkill command in a Terminal window. This command allows you to kill any program just by clicking on its window.

To use the xkill command, open a Terminal window as discussed earlier in this post. Enter “xkill” (without the quotes) at the prompt and press Enter. The cursor turns into an X. To kill a program, simply click anywhere in the program’s window, or on the title bar of the window.

Use the Gnome System Monitor

If you are using the Gnome desktop environment, you can use a graphical tool, called System Monitor, to kill a program. Select Administration | System Monitor from the System menu.

NOTE: You can also open the System Monitor by pressing Alt + F2 to open the Run Application dialog box. Enter “gnome-system-monitor” (without the quotes) in the edit box and click Run.

On the System Monitor dialog box, click the Processes tab. A list of all running processes displays. To kill a program, find the program’s process in the list (firefox-bin for Firefox) and select it. Right-click on the process and select Kill Process from the popup menu.

A confirmation dialog box displays. If you are sure you want to kill the selected process, click Kill Process.

To close the System Monitor, select Quit from the Monitor menu.

NOTE: If you need to kill a program that is running with root privileges, use one of the first two methods of killing a program and type “sudo” (without the quotes) before the killall command or the xkill command.

Speed Up the Start Time for Firefox by Creating a New Profile

If you use Mozilla Firefox on a regular basis, you may experience very long startup times, possibly several minutes. This may happen if you have a lot of extensions, themes, and plugins installed, or there may be something wrong with your profile. It also depends on what extensions are installed. Some extensions may take up a lot of resources.

There is a test you can perform to see if the installed extensions and themes are slowing down the start time. To do this, start Firefox in Safe Mode. You can find this command in the Mozilla Firefox program group on the Start menu.

Running Firefox in Safe Mode, starts Firefox without loading any extensions or themes. We tried this with our installation of Firefox in Windows XP, and it loaded a lot faster. We have a lot of extensions installed and several themes.

If you have been using your profile for a long time, that may be slowing down Firefox’s startup time, also. We have previously written about different methods for speeding up the startup time for Firefox (see our posts, Speed Up Firefox by Preloading Firefox Components, and Speed Up Firefox with a Single Click). You can also improve your startup time in Firefox by creating a fresh, new profile. This method can be helpful if you think one of your extensions or themes is causing the slow startup. You can reinstall extensions and themes one at a time in your new profile and see how they affect your startup time.

NOTE: Before creating a new profile, we recommend that you backup your current profile in case you want to go back to it. See our post, Backup Firefox and Thunderbird Profiles, for more information. Also, you can generate a list of extensions, themes, and plugins installed in your current profile, so you know what you had installed. See our post, Save and Print a List of Firefox Extensions Installed on Your Computer.

To open the Firefox Profile Manager in Windows 7, open the Start menu and enter the following command in the Search programs and files box.

firefox.exe -P

NOTE: There is a single dash before the “P.”

Press Enter or click the resulting link.

If you are using Windows XP, select Run from the Start menu and enter the same command (firefox.exe -P) in the Open edit box. Click OK.

NOTE: If the “firefox.exe –P” command does not work, enter the full path to Firefox enclosed in quotes, as follows:

“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” –P

The Firefox – Choose User Profile dialog box displays. Click Create Profile.

The Welcome screen on the Create Profile Wizard displays. Click Next.

Enter a name for your new profile in the Enter new profile name edit box. If you want to store the new profile in a different location other than the default location listed, use the Choose Folder button to select a different folder. We chose to create the profile in the default location. Click Finish.

You are returned to the Firefox – Choose User Profile dialog box. While you are trying out your new profile, you might want Firefox to ask you which profile you want to use each time it opens. To do this, select the Don’t ask at startup check box so there is NO check mark in the box.

Turning off the Don’t ask at startup option causes the Firefox – Choose User Profile dialog box to display every time you open Firefox. Select the profile you want to use from the list (for this example, select the new profile) and click Start Firefox.

The Firefox – Choose User Profile dialog box closes and Firefox opens using the new profile.

If you decide to keep your new profile because it is performing faster, you may still need to transfer some important information, such as passwords, from your old profile to your new one. To do this, see Mozilla’s article, Recovering important data from an old profile, in their Knowledge Base, for information about the location of the different types of files in your profile and how to transfer them.

Once you have set up your new profile the way you want it, and it starts up sufficiently fast, you can delete the old profile by selecting it in the Profile Manager and clicking the Delete Profile button.

Use the Keyboard to Change Row Height and Column Width in Excel 2007

If you prefer using the keyboard rather than the mouse, there is a way in Excel to change the row height and column width using the keyboard; however, it is not very intuitive.

To set the row height, press Alt to put Excel into a “shortcut key mode.” You will see shortcut keys displays on each tab of the ribbon.

Press “H” to indicate you want to use the Home tab. New shortcut keys display on each tool in the tab. Press “O” to indicate you want to use the Format tool in the Cells group.

A drop-down menu displays with shortcut keys next to the options. Press “H” to select the Row Height option under the Cell Size heading on the menu.

NOTE: To change the column width, press “W” instead of “H.”

The Row Height dialog box displays. Enter the desired height in the edit box and press Enter.

There is another method for changing the row height. Select any cell in the row you want to change and press Shift + Spacebar to select the entire row.

Press R to indicate you want to change the row height. Excel displays the Row Height dialog box.
Type the value you want for the row height.
Press Enter.

Press Shift + F10 to display the context menu, which is the same menu you see if you were to right-click on the selected row. Press “R” to select the row height option.

The Row Height dialog box displays. Enter the desired height in the edit box and press Enter.

Changing the column width using the method is similar to changing the row height. To select the entire column, press Ctrl + Spacebar. Then, press Shift + F10 to access the context menu. Press “C” twice to select the second “C” command on the menu and press Enter.

The Column Width dialog box displays. Enter the desired column width and press Enter.

The shortcut keys that display using the Alt key on the tabs and on the tools and options allow you to access many options using the keyboard.

It is important to applying access restriction to the USB port of client user PC to prevent data theft or virus derived from a variety of USB devices, including USB removable media. To facilitate port access control quickly, you'll need an additional application called USB Port Locked.

As the name implies, this application is able to lock all USB ports owned a PC with password protection. Users do not need to bother anymore to disable or enable the USB port manually which takes more time and process.
